Echoing previous comments, Ive ridden this route many times and its a great road, whether youre bumbling along admiring scenery, or testing your cornering ability.

Worth noting that there are one or two adverse camber bends, and approaching Barrhill the road surface was pretty messed up (Jan 2013).

For a decent round trip using Newton Stewart as a base, once at Barrhill take the first left onto the B7027 - some narrow bits, but a cracking range of bends and even more spectacular scenery than the A714. (Will upload the route shortly).

Very interesting route to Girvan. The views over Girvan and Ailsa Craig are fantastic. Ive been in july-08 and enjoyed it a lot, adding it to the route coming from Dumfries thought New Galloway and Queens Way.

This road has something for everyone. At the Newton Stewart end there are some pretty fast straights and nice sweeping bends. Watch out for deer on this stretch though. Pleasantly wooded run at the side of the River Cree. Road surface here is good but watch out for slippy areas particularly just after a storm. After Bargrennan the road starts to climb and the scenery changes. The road surface also changes and there are quite a few bumps and holes. Approaching Barhill the roads gets twistier. A mixture of fast straights and twisty sections awaits now as you travel towards Girvan and beware of gravel on the corners which is sometimes washed into the road. Approaching Girvan you will have a cracking view of Ailsa Craig on a good day but take care, the route down into Girvan is twisty and demanding. Come back by the A77 Girvan - Stranraer route or head back to Newton Stewart for a different perspective. If you travel this route from Girvan link up with the A712 Newton Stewart- Crocketford route and make a day of it.
