I rode this route today, although I left from Gerrards Cross rather than Wycombe, which probably added another 5 miles to the trip.

Overall, I found the ride to be pleasant although a bit squirty. What I mean by that is there are a few 60mph stretches, but theyre punctuated by several 40mph/30mph zones. It felt as if every time I was just starting to get into a rhythm, I had to slow down again. Im not sure that any of the 60mph stretches lasted longer than a minute or two. So, it felt as if I was continually squirting up to sixty and them slowing down again. Not really a major problem but definitely detracted from the overall experience.

I stopped off at Milton Common to admire the Triumph bikes in Hugendens and spent a good half hour wishing that Id remembered to bring a bag of money with me. There were some very nice machines on display - new and used.

For the return journey, I went via Aylesbury (A329 - A418 - A413). That was fun too, and the A413 stretch from Aylesbury to Amersham was particularly enjoyable. Most of that portion of the journey was 60mph (I think that there was one 40mph zone) with a few nice roundabouts to navigate. The traffic was quite heavy (for a Thursday afternoon) but there were lots of overtaking opportunities.

Total riding time was around 90 minutes. The Wycombe-Milton Common portion was probably 20 minutes.

I used to live in West Wycombe and bought a couple of Triumphs from Hughendon M40 in Milton Common, including the one in the video I submitted earlier for this road, so I know it well. Its not quite as nice now as it was in the video, due to the cancer of the ever spreading speed limit; for example, theres now a 40 limit through Postcombe. Fair enough, you might feel, except that theyve started the limit in the middle of nowhere on each side of Postcombe, so for a 100 metre section where a limit was probably a good idea theres a mile of speed limit, and the limit to the West of Postcombe ends at the start of a section of double white lines, forcing you to chose which law to break or sit behind some dawdling ******* for another mile, fuming. All the village limits along this stretch have moved out half a mile or so from their locations in the video, all unecessarily in my view. Having said all that, its still a brilliant stretch of road. Respect the villages, and watch the sparse junctions you pass through, some of which are blind if you e travelling at speed, and which are the locations that could bring you into conflict with a stationary, slow moving or turning vehicle. Other than that, the steep drop down the chalk escarpment before you cross the Thame road is good fun, but watch for damp patches under the trees a long time after rain and that nasty slippery leaf mould stuff that builds up in autumn. The fast, open sweepers on the run up towards Milton Common are a special treat.

One of the best bits of the A40 - some nice fast sections with sweeping turns plus some tasty tighter bits around Aston hill. Need to slow down in the villages en route! Also you can visit the Hellfire caves at the start and Hughenden Triumph at the end!
